Gay and homoerotic art is more than porn. Of course - it is some times porn as well, but often gay art is more interesting when it takes a broader view of a gay man's life and condition. You'll find more about it, by taking a look to my art, that depicts male emotions, feelings, fantasies but also the way to live as a man who loves men.
I am interested in using the canvas as a billboard for my thoughts and ideas on our social, cultural, and political identities. I comment on life from a gay male perspective. My work promotes individualism, through embracing elements of culture, graffiti, religious art, classical and romantic art. I use drawing and paint to create my work. I have become increasingly interested in representing the gay identity as a banner or canvas for my expression, using my own feelings and experiences as a reflection of urban ang gay culture. These days the very things we hold as being sacred are being taken from us and exploited by popular cultures increasing need for the fresh, and new. Diluting our sense of what is real and true. My attempt is to question this trust. The most important influences on our popular culture have spawned from some sort of underground. The new works that I have been creating are representations of defenders of this underground. These characters are presented like Byzantine icons, with self-inflicted individuality, and the presence of a super hero. I see these characters as the future renegades or protectors of authenticity.
I honestly can't remember a time when I wasn't drawing, as many artists before me have said. Realizing I was gay at a young age, I often focused my efforts on the male figure. Early on, I took special interest in the work of classical European artists (Da Vinci, Michelangelo, Caravaggio). Later, in my teens, I became aware of explicit gay artwork, mainly Tom of Finland, Etienne, and Harry Bush, but before the advent of the Internet these images were very difficult to find. I always wondered if I could ever be a part of this brave group of men.
About elen years ago, I took an important step and began submitting my drawings and paintings for publication, primarily in internet. These submissions have been welcomed there and I would like to offer my thanks to my first collectors from internet, for their support of my work and that of artists all over the world. Although I have had some pieces appear in other medias and on books, the internet has gaven me exposure to the world.
In 2002 I moved to Europe, from my born country Mexico and here I have had many other opportunities to show and sell my artworks.
Stylistically, I strive for something between realism and expressionis. I leave total realism to the photographers-the appeal of drawing and painting is in its openness to multiple possibilities. While I am proud of my work and pleased with the response it has gotten, I I'm happy for have been able to pursue formal artistic training, that heplped me to improve my art.
I work with live models, and some great friendships have developed from these working relationships, but i also use photographs. Most of these models are straight; I'm not sure why, but the vast majority of those replying to advertisements have been so. The artist/model relationship is always an amazing experience. A strong bond of trust is imperative-I NEVER reveal true identities-and often the whole experience is enjoyable for us both.
I do hope you enjoy exploring my online gallery. In addition to the works seen here, I also accept requests for commissioned drawings, apintigns and portraits.
